Bander, your list guesses for me are good in spirit - and some probably hit the mark (though not Batman. I liked it quite a bit, but wouldn't find a place for it in my favs). It's funny, I was actually just thinking about my favs, and came to the conclusion that I have to list mine in categories. Spinal Tap would definitely be in my list for comedy.
I'll use this as a place holder for a bit, but then add some entries.
(actually, I'll list things in the comments section. Think of that as the "spoilers" section)

OK, here is some of my stuff in no particular order, yet:
SciFi:
Close Encounters
Star Wars (of course)
Bladerunner (yes, yes - and, director's cut)
Aliens
T1 and T2
Comedy: (these are movies that included at least 2 scenes that made me laugh hysterically)
Spinal Tap
MP:Holy Grail
Airplane
Naked Gun
Groundhog Day
Raising Arizona
Action:
Die Hard
Predator (could be sci fi)
Horror:
Evil Dead (yes, the first one. I honestly found that scary when I first saw it)
Alien
The Ring (no, not fucking Ringu. Can't I like a remake, does the original HAVE to be favored?)
B movies:
Commando
The Warriors (sorry Lubars
Other:
Dazed and Confused
Shoot, I thought I'd be able to edit my comments. Anyway, forgot the Matrix under sci fi
This is a good start. Now just pick one from each category and you're done! Sorry, B movies!
Harold Ramis is a genius and I insist that the Analyze movies never existed. Groundhog Day nails what is for me a universal truth: the universe will keep presenting you with the same situation until you make the "right" response. My personal groundhog day was a company called "Rhode Island Novelty." It took me about four years to get the right answer. One of the things I love about the movie is you really have no idea how long he was in there.
I'm with Steve on the Evil Dead. It really picked up when they made it teh funnies. And as long as we're quibbling, I take the fanboy purist position that Empire is THE Star Wars movie of note. The Ring was pretty awes. I think that was one of the best horror movies ever made, it would certainly be in my five for the genre.
I'm not saying that Empire isn't a better movie. Star Wars includes a lot of nostalgia cache that trumps Empire, for me.
As for Evil Dead - the issue isn't what movie is BETTER. I'm just saying ED1 was a movie that (at the time) scared the pants off me - thus making my horror list. Whereas ED2, though funny, wasn't funny enough to be placed in my "comedy" list.
