Almost all of our hard-wiring points us toward selecting mates of good health "strenth." Does this predilection on my part suggest some kind of deeply-rooted psychological impulse to go for what is "attainable?"

It indicates that you're also a genetic dead end, so that your brain points you to other flawed and useless creatures of your own type.
It's a way of keeping the gene pool progressing.
