My criteria for The Five is sort of about the idea of durable goods. The movies that give you the most "take-home" or had the longest impact. Often a movie that I don't really enjoy that much at the time or don't even have that strong of a desire to see again will really give me something to hamster-wheel on for a while. Memento and Waking Life are good essamples of this (particularly the "climax", Guy Pierce's little self-talk where he lets go of the steering wheel, very near the end).
My top five in no order:
1. Baraka
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. Brazil
4. Amelie
5. Sen to Chihiro

Every once in a while I ask myself how I can be friends with such polar opposites as Bander & mumps, but these movie lists remind me why. Mumps & I, especially, have a very high movie correlation.
For my own fag list, I won't pick movies that are my absolute faves (mumps has hit most), but instead pick some that you may have never heard of or seen:
Cookers (not Clockers)
Primer
The Sweet Smell of Success
The Proposition
Little Otik
And a few that have been mentioned, but still need a shout out:
The Road Warrior
Escape From New York/Big Trouble in Little China (oh, why must I choose!)
Crimes & Misdemeanors
Starship Troopers
Fast, Cheap, Out of Control
And directors (which will surprise nobody):
J & E Coen
PT Anderson
Paul Verhoeven
John Carpenter
Errol Morris
By the way, everyone reading this must watch "Primer". In fact, you should all watch my 5 lesser-known ones, but make sure you watch Primer. Not exactly a crowd-pleaser, but appropriate to our circle.
Another little-known movie you all should check out:
Roger Dodger
And one final shout out (you all knew it was coming):
Miller's Crossing
I need to watch that movie again - I'm getting the itch. Rick has my copy.
Forgot to include 'Mulholland Drive' in my faves!
Fists: Agree with Miller's Crossing. And no 'Machinist'?
