Hmm, I protest, but whatevs. (as some COOOOL people say).

I wasn't sure if Shawn liked the theatrical release better than "Slipstream," so I had to make some tough choices.

I actually happened to catch the "final cut" on tv the other day (it was HD, so I had to see how it looked). I didn't really notice many changes, though - it looked pretty.

What is "Slipstream"?

Also, Ice Pirates is actually a movie I hate. It's one of those movies that HBO felt was the PERFECT filler when nothing else was on (back in the 80s). I guess they had fewer movie choices than your average syndicated TV station, or something. Krull was also a favorite of theirs.

I'd replace IP with Die Hard. And I feel rather insulted that you didn't include Star Wars anywhere on my list.

I belive the movie is "Yentl" not "Yenta", although it would be awesome if there were that was unapologetically about gossipy Jewesses.

I know for a fact that Mumps found out how much he liked "Fiddler" only a few years ago. He's too much of a contrarian to go for much of the stereotypical stuff.

As for me, although the list is somewhat facetious, you're wise to include Coens/Raimi, Carpenter and Verhoeven into your mix, although I wouldn't pick those 3 films; anyone knows that it's "Evil Dead 2" that's the definitive entry in the series. I only saw "Dead Alive" for the first time a year or so ago. It had its moments, but there are other films like it that do a better job in terms of wacky horror (aka "Little Otik", even though it may have been inspired by DA). I would have lost the Raimi, added something by Tarantino or maybe "Raiders".

Of course, this only prompts me to come up with my own semi-serious list of faves inspired by fact & personality:

Mumps:
Battle Royale
Kill Bill 1-2
Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
Zardoz
Fortress (1993)

Bander:
Supersize Me
Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral
The Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash
The Bounty (1984)
Return of the Jedi

Kuru (sorry if these are a bit dated, Dan)
Escape From New York
The Thing (1992)
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
The Music Man
Saw IV

OpTer:
I'm ashamed to say that I scarcely know my own brother's movie tastes! He inherits my dad's appreciation of all things, so I couldn't say what he considers his all time greats.

Hesh:
Other than movies that give you opportunties to imitate Emperor Palpatine, all we ever talk about is TV.

I'm not sure why that is, as far as movies goes. I can rattle off favorite games, and favorite TV shows, and other things, but for movies, I always have a hard time coming up with anything resembling a "favorites". I think my taste in movies is generally terrible enough that you can't pin me down to a favorites list.

Perhaps it's just shame, keeping me from publishing a list.

Also, shouldn't the Warriors be on Mumpsimus' list?

"The Warriors"! Shit, of course! How could I forget that one.

Well Steve has naturally begun what I was hoping this would result in. No one reveal their actual favorites yet ! -- for every correct answer that anyone gets (for anyone else) they get 1 ROUND OF NINJANAUT, swords allowed.

Steve didn't get get any of mine correct, although he was very close on a few. My obsession with the Bounty story didn't make Bounty one of my top five. (Steve, you can guess again for me)

gawd how could you forget SLIPSTREAM. I think it had that guy from Hardball, and of course, Mark Hamill. You loved it!

The Hessian said...

Ah, yes.

I wasn't really trying to guess actual favorites, but instead produce a list of movies that were probably enjoyed by the person, but were more representative of a caricature of their personality, which is more fun anyway. I assumed that was the spirit of your original one, which is why you don't list your own favorites (which would be "real" favorites).

Bandersnatch said...

Well, yeah. It was basically an excuse to make a list of diverse jewmovies. (I mean, how can anyone NOT hate "Ice Pirates?")

But I thought it would be fun to see if we can guess each other's actual favorite movies too. I didn't list my own because then I would have had to title the post, "Evidence of My Prolonged Jeuvenilia."

I actually want to know what Rick's favorite movies are. Shawn's too.

Genius post! Well guessing everybody's faves but mine. I was thinking how could you get that Hootie vibe from OpTer just from X-Box Live?? But then I remembered you knew him back in the day - but THEN I remembered you didn't know him in college - AND THEN I remembered they weren't even popular until we were out of college! So you must be a genius (even if he doesn't like them - I have no idea).

Coincidence of coincidences, watched 'Passion of Ayn Rand' with my wife just a few days ago (nabbed it on the DVR).

As for 'Fiddler' - yes I saw it way after the Brobergs (same for Schindler's List) - it's the kind of movie where I could enjoy it more if I knew gentiles weren't watching it too.

Don't worry Mumps, we non-jews secretly hate Fiddler.
